Approach and beliefs
Scott’s leadership is founded on two deeply-held convictions: his belief in people and his premium on trust.
People power
For Scott, Ultima may be a technology business, but it’s the people who really make a difference.
“We create and develop technology but ultimately it’s about having good people around – that’s what makes us successful, and therefore it’s what makes our customers successful.
Making people feel secure, and nurturing them personally as well as professionally, so that they learn and develop their sills, is a passion for Scott.
“People move around, that’s a fact of life today. But I want to make sure we enhance their careers and hopefully their personal lives on the way through, rather than just draining them.”
But a belief in people is more than a nice-to-have. It translates into customer impact and value.
“When I talk about our business evolving, and I’m asked “so what?”, it’s our people – and the way they blend human empathy with business and technical expertise – that makes the difference to what we achieve for our customers.”
Trust and integrity
Scott’s word is his bond, and he’s intolerant of the Game of Thrones-style behaviours found in more than a few businesses.
“I have a very high level of moral standards. When I say I will do something, or if I say the company will do something, people can trust it will be done to the best of our abilities, even when it’s a really tough ask. That’s true for everyone who comes into contact with our business: for employees, for partners and for customers.”
Making tough decisions is part of the CEO’s role, and Scott is more than aware that people need to believe he’s doing the right thing when these tough decisions have to be taken.
“If people say about me “He’s honest, and he does what he says he’s going to do”” then I’m doing my job the right way.”
